Versatility and expansive dynamic control are key components of
Michael (Mike) McKinley’s signature drum style, which has
been featured throughout the globe in numerous musical settings.
His performing career spans a period from the 1950’s to present
and includes work in radio, TV, film, recordings, composing, production
and education. Artists such as Herb Ellis, Dianne Schurr, Kenny
Rankin, and Monty Alexander have featured him in their bands. Now
a major part of the Central California music world, he works extensively
in a variety of settings, playing with virtually every established
and emerging group in the area. He is featured on recent recordings—serving
as both drummer and producer—and is also heard regularly as
a broadcaster for KRML Jazz Radio in Carmel, California.
Sharing insight and experience
have been constant hallmarks during his tenure in music, including
private teaching, seminars and clinics for players of all ages.
In January of 2001 Mike became Regional Director of JazzMasters
Workshop, operating workshops at the Carmel Youth Center, The Boys
& Girls Club of Monterey County, Magic Circle Center, and Captain
Cooper School in Big Sur. Mike’s philosophy: “The most
important thing is the music.”
In his
own words:
“To be a part of the JazzMasters
Workshop program not only gives me great pride, but also enables
me to share common goals: creativity, communication, the joy of
playing music and experiencing new things, all in a safe environment.
We learn from each other that music can save lives.”
